Ten houseboats were gutted after a fire broke out at Deep Creek Marina in Moama in the early evening of 14 December 2017 . The Marina is actually home to around 120 vessels but locals and firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading further than the initial boats. It has been reported that a faulty air-conditioner in one of the boats sparked the blaze, which quickly spread to the closely moored neighbouring craft. The blaze also ignited a grass fire and there was oil leakage into the river.
Owners and insurers are counting a bill in excess of $5million and as with any fire where damage exceeds $500,000 NSW police conducted an investigation. However with such a catastrophic outcome marine insurers asked GKAIG to conduct a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the fire.
